2023-03-18

Background

§ The herb peppermint, a natural cross between two types of mint (water mint and spearmint), grows throughout Europe and North America.

§ Both peppermint leaves and the Essential Oil from peppermint have been used for health purposes. Peppermint Oil is the essential oil taken from the flowering parts and leaves of the peppermint plant. (Essential oils are very concentrated oils containing substances that give a plant its characteristic odor or flavor.)

§ Peppermint is a common flavoring agent in foods and beverages, and peppermint oil is used as a fragrance in soaps and cosmetics.

§ Peppermint has been used for health purposes for several thousand years. Records from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt mention that it was used for digestive disorders and other conditions.

§ Today, peppermint is promoted for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), other digestive problems, the common cold, sinus infections, headaches, and other conditions. Peppermint oil is promoted for topical use (applied to the skin) for problems like headache, muscle aches, joint pain, and itching. In aromatherapy, peppermint oil is promoted for treating coughs and colds, reducing pain, improving mental function, and reducing stress.

Peppermint Oil Uses and Benefits

§ Peppermint oil is one of the most versatile essential oils out there. It can be used aromatically, topically and internally to address a number of health concerns, from muscles aches and seasonal allergy symptoms to low energy and digestive complaints.

§ It`s also commonly used to boost energy levels and improve both skin and hair health.

§ A review conducted that peppermint has significant antimicrobial and antiviral activities. It also:

§ works as a strong antioxidant

§ displays anti-tumor actions in lab studies

§ shows anti-allergenic potential

§ has pain-killing effects

§ helps relax the gastrointestinal tract

§ may be chemopreventive

§ It`s no wonder why peppermint oil is one of the most popular essential oils in the world and why I recommend that everyone has it in his or her medicine cabinet at home.

§ Alleviates Headaches

§ Peppermint for headaches has the ability to improve circulation, soothe the gut and relax tense muscles. All of these conditions can cause tension headaches or migraines, making peppermint oil one of the best essential oils for headaches.

§ A clinical trial from researchers at the Neurological Clinic found that a combination of peppermint oil, Eucalyptus Oil and ethanol had a [significant analgesic effect with a reduction in sensitivity to headaches." When these oils were applied to the forehead and temples, they also increased cognitive performance and had a muscle-relaxing and mentally relaxing effect.

§ To use it as a natural headache remedy, simply apply two to three drops to your temples, forehead and back of neck. It will begin to ease pain and tension upon contact.

Boosts Skin Health

Peppermint oil has calming, softening, toning and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin when it`s used topically. It has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties.

A review of essential oils as potential antimicrobials to treat skin diseases published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that peppermint oil is effective when used to reduce:

· blackheads

· chicken pox

· greasy skin

· dermatitis

· inflammation

· itchy skin

· ringworm

· scabies

· sunburn

To improve the health of your skin and use as a home remedy for acne, mix two to three drops with equal parts Lavender Essential Oil, and apply the combination topically to the area of concern.

And the list of uses goes on....

· For bug bites, use a combination of peppermint essential oil and lavender essential oil to quickly dismiss the itch! It's really similar to the logic of using toothpaste or menthol cream, but without the messy paste. Remember to dilute with a Carrier Oil if you are sensitive to straight essential oil on your skin.

· Add some peppermint oil to shampoo to treat dandruff.

· If you have a problem with ants in your house, leave a peppermint soaked cotton ball in their pathway. They're not big fans of mint and you'll have the nice aroma lingering in your home!

· For tired aching feet, add a few drops to a foot bath for some relief of sore, swollen and overworked feet!

· Give your trash can area a refresher and add a few drops to the bottom for a pleasant minty aroma.
